Research & Career Interests:

My research interests are centered around using bioacoustics as a tool to understand the behavioral ecology of marine mammals in their rapidly changing environment. Throughout my time as a graduate student, I will focus on using passive acoustic monitoring to study the seasonal presence, distribution and behavior of arctic seals and cetaceans in Kotzebue Sound, Alaska. Conclusions of this project will inform proposals through the Native Village of Kotzebue to appeal for increased management of marine environment thus preserving the habitat of traditional marine resources.

As a person of Native Hawaiian descent, I am aware of the interconnectedness of ecological systems and cultural history of indigenous groups and hope to be an advocate for highlighting the value of their insight in modern science. My graduate research will demonstrate the use of bioacoustics as a tool to augment Traditional Ecological Knowledge when advocating for conservation initiatives. I hope this co-production of knowledge project is the step of many I will take towards bridging the intersectionality of native intelligence and western scientific methods as a powerful mechanism in environmental management. I look forward to learning how to be a better advocate for indigenous peoples and prioritizing trust, respect, and patience in our collaboration.
